He rewards those who seek him

August 10, 2015

Have you seen them?  The memes that say something like:  “If you share this in the next 30 seconds God will financially bless/heal you in 30 days/add you to His kingdom/be really happy/etc.  For those of you who are not much into social media, the old chain letters are back.

Hopefully you recognize these as ridiculous (at best).  God does not work that way.  Certainly He CAN, but mostly He doesn’t.  There is no magic formula, no right words, no amount of “faith” will manipulate God into becoming your personal genie and grant you your wishes.  I am not saying God does not bless His people.  In fact the opposite is true.  I have been GREATLY blessed by God on MANY occasions; but it has little to do with my ability to “convince” Him.  Instead it has to do with how much I have sought Him.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)(emphasis mine)

Obviously the first reward is that we find Him (Jer 29:11).  However because of His great love for us, finding Him, as important and wonderful as that is, is only the beginning.  I am talking about the peace, the strength the confidence we have because of God in our lives.  The more we fully understand God and His love for us, the less of a self-esteem problem we would have.  I am also talking about “getting stuff” (my own personal love language).  I have been materially blessed by God more times than I can count.  That however is not the point.  The actual point is contained within the word that has been translated “seek” in the Hebrews 6:11.  That word carries the idea of investigating, of diligently seeking, even craving.  When was the last time you craved God?  To those people God becomes a rewarder.

It does come with a warning however.  In John 6:26-27 (ESV)

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.  Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

Setting Up a Quota Syste

August 3, 2015

For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

—2 Corinthians 4:5

I have thanked God many times for the sweet, winsome ways of the Holy Spirit in dealing with the heart of this untaught lad when I was only seventeen. We had a neighbor by the name of Holman....One day I was walking up the street with this friendly neighbor. Suddenly, he put his hand on my shoulder.

"You know," he said, "I have been wondering about you. I have been wond...

The Reality of Pride

July 27, 2015

I share a lot of these with you because even though A.W. Tozer wrote these decades ago, it fits so well in our day.  Often, when I read what he says I am not sure whether to say “Amen” or “Ouch”.  Pretty sure this one is an “Ouch”.

The Reality of Pride

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way... do I hate. Proverbs 8:13

Let me warn you of the danger and the bigotry of human pride. You will find it everywhere in the world, and it will feast...

Humility: A Blessed Thing If You Can Find It

July 13, 2015

Bev and I got back from vacation on Thursday.  All the stress and problems were right there waiting for my return.  Actually, that’s not exactly correct.  I kept them with me the whole time.  I also added a few new ones during our trip.  I realize that I need to learn to relax somehow.

Humility: A Blessed Thing If You Can Find It

...He that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Luke 14:11

Watch out, Christian brothers and sisters, for the danger of arrogance, in assuming that you are somebo...

Who God Made Me To Be

June 29, 2015

I have spent the week at Cowboy’s Rest as the camp medic.  It reminds me of who God made me to be.  You see, all the jobs I have had revolve around a theme.  In High School, I was a lifeguard.  I joined the Coast Guard right out of High School and when I retired, I became a firefighter and an EMT (not a paramedic – there is a vast difference).  For 24 years, I have been a pastor.  At first blush you would think that the pastor part does not fit with all the rest, but stick with me – I w...

Father's Day

June 22, 2015

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!  Sometimes it can seem no one appreciates what dads do!

I have told you all about my family, some of you doubt we were as bad as all that.  Trust me, you don’t know the half of it.  It was not all bad however.  I remember having to be up way early (before sunrise) one morning.  I got dressed and went out to our lanai (screened in patio) to wait for my ride.  I was just about to turn a light on when a voice said:  “Don’t do that.”  It sc...

The Church should be known for what it is for

June 15, 2015

Seems as though “we” are being bombarded by others who are telling us how we should be.  I heard something a while ago and I passed it along to you (several times), and now I would like to bring some clarification.  What I told you was that the Church should be known for what it is for and not what we are against.  I believe this, but let me bring some clarification because I do not mean what others seem to be saying.

The message from others is that the Church is too condemning and we ne...

Happiness

June 8, 2015

There has been a lot of discussion on Social Media about – HAPPINESS.  Whatever makes you happy, you should be able to do and no one has the right to judge you.  You have already heard my rant about judgment, so I won’t go there (If you have not, just ask me – and stand back).  Do we really have the right to make ourselves happy?  Oh sure the Preamble of the United States Constitution affirms that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” are chief among the inalienable rights gi...

Just as you are

May 18, 2015

Time and time again I hear, or see someone tell others that God loves you just as you are.  I have said it many times myself and I absolutely agree with it, however I never leave it there because I believe it is only half an idea.

On the one hand – God really does love you and you don’t have to change anything before He will accept you.  In fact, God has already accepted the entire population of the world, past, present and future – Just As They Are.  He did this BEFORE Jesus ...

Seperating Sin From The Sinner

May 11, 2015

There are times when I wish you had a better pastor (I know some of you do too!).

After the service last week, I was talking with Walt White about what he said to us.  He was talking about the idea that we should allow a Muslim convert to Jesus continue to identify themselves as Muslim (culturally).  I completely agree with the idea, and he and I expanded that idea to others and I expressed that I often have difficulty separating the sin from the sinner.

I’m not sure if it is a result of...
