Saint Nicholas

December 15, 2014

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patrai on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned.  He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church; the anniversary of his death became a day of celebration.

Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of St. Nicholas' life and deeds.

One story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value—a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home-providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. And that is the story of St. Nicholas the real Santa Claus.

God does not play games with us.

2 Samuel 7:12-13 (NIV)
When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.  He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Something has come up a few times, with different people.  What happens when you are convinced God wants you to do something and then something else happens that seem to completely change those...

Mac

December 1, 2014

I am on my way back from Las Vegas and participating in the funeral service of my friend Jimmy Mac McNamara.  Please remain in prayer for his family and friends, he will be severely missed.
It seems appropriate to remind you that 1Thes 4 tells us that we do not mourn like the rest of the world does.  Notice it does not say; we do not mourn.  We do mourn; we are emotional beings, made that way by our creator.  Not to mourn or to act as if everything is just great is to deny the rea...

Thanksgiving

November 25, 2014

First of all, Bev and I want to thank you for the gifts and appreciation you gave us last week.  We are both truly privileged that you call us your pastors.

Secondly, in honor of Thanksgiving next week, I wanted to remind you how it got started:

It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year, defending us with His guardian care against unfriendly designs from abroad and vouchsafing to us in His mercy many and signal victories over the enemy, who is of our ...

Strong Christians = Strong Church

November 17, 2014

Last week in my rant I went on (and on) about how the world needs a strong America.  This week I want to expound on how the world needs a strong Church.  I will go so far as to say that if the church does what it is supposed to do, the role America would play would be less necessary.  Of course, what makes the Church strong, would be stronger Christians.

Frankly we have all the answers.  Jesus is all the answers (poor grammar, I know).  He made every single human being on this planet, and ha...

THANK A VET!

November 10, 2014

I hope the elections went the way you wanted them too – more importantly I hope you voted.  One of the first questions I ask people who start to talk about politics is whether or not they voted.  If the answer is not, I suggest they have nothing to complain about.

This Tuesday we will be celebrating Veteran’s Day.  It is a day Americans set aside to honor those of us who have spent time defending this great country.  I come from a very patriotic family – a military family.  In my offic...

Just Don't Get Me Started

November 3, 2014

Tis the season!

No, I am not talking about Christmas (yet), the season I am talking about is the season of controversy.  I am talking about Halloween.  You know that evil pagan holiday when the entire world worships Satan?  Oh and don’t get me started on Christmas!

I do not deny that an awful lot that is associated with Oct 31st has an evil bent to it.  Yes witches and pagans and all manner of “evil” people celebrate this time of year as special – there is no denying that.

You (...

Workout your salvation

October 27, 2014

I (once again) joined a gym last week.  I am getting back into shape (other than round), and with winter coming, it will get a little iffy riding my bike.

I was talking with the owner about his spiritual journey.  He is a Christian, but is discouraged because he thinks he should be further along in his walk with God.  I asked some questions about when he first started to work out and how he works out now.  He smiled and told me it was pretty pathetic at the beginning and now it is much bette...

Captain Obvious Strikes Again!

October 20, 2014

Are you ready for the understatement of the week?  The world is really messed up.  Whether you blame politicians (of either party), global warming, Muslims, Christians, jaywalkers or whatever; you must admit – the world is really messed up.  Here is something you may not have thought of:  It is supposed to be this way.  Don’t believe me?  Read your Bible:

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,  while evil people and impostors will go on from ba...

Another kind of sin

October 13, 2014

We often think about sin as something we do.  There is another kind of sin in our lives that has as much impact on God’s ability to bless us and our ability to serve Him as “our sin”.  It is when others have sinned against us.  It is difficult for us to fight this kind of sin because we often do not see it nor do we see its effect on our lives.

It happens when someone who has some authority in your life, (such as a parent, sibling, other relative, or a “friend”, and worse; a pastor...
