Who We Are

October 7, 2014

I was at a funeral a while ago and was introduced to a woman who used to go to this church.  When she found out who I was, she demanded to know why I changed the name of the church.  She emphasized her displeasure by repeatedly pounding her cane on the floor and then pointing it at me.  I smiled and I told her that we changed the name of the church from First Baptist to Greater Life Church, because we felt it better described what God wanted us to offer to our community.  She looked surprised and said; “Oh, that makes sense.”  I thanked her and I began to ask her about when she attended and who was the pastor, etc.

I have said many times that we are here by divine appointment.  God could have brought us anywhere at any time to do His will and we find ourselves in Elko, NV today.  We are God’s gift to our town.  My question is; what kind of gift are we?  Are we the kind that someone looks at says thank you politely and moves on?  Or are we the kind of gift that keeps on giving?  Are people drawn to us time and time again?  Do they just know that if they talk to us they will get the truth, sure, but they will be encouraged and feel better?

In order for that to happen, we ourselves need to open avenues for God to pour His greater life into us.  We cannot give what we do not have.  Galatians tells us that a natural result of spending time with God is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB)).  If you are running low on these, you are not alone.  There are times when we just seem to run out of gas and the answer is easy;  start spending a little more time with God.  After all, Greater Life is not our idea, it is His and He came to share it with us and through us.

The thief comes only to take the sheep and to put them to death: he comes for their destruction: I have come so that they may have life and have it in greater measure. John 10:10 (BBE)

Listening To The Holy Spirit

September 29, 2014

As you know if you were here last week, Bev has been pretty sick.  In fact, she had to call a substitute for her class on Monday and Tuesday.  She went into work today (Wednesday).  She had voiced a concern that she might not have the strength to make it through her day.

As I was making my way to my car, I thought I should go back and pray for her – I ignored the thought (I know, I am a terrible husband).  In my defense, I have prayed with her about her illness a few times before, but I ju...

He's baaaack (or is He?)!

September 8, 2014

Did you know that Jesus is back?  Five of him in fact!  Gosh, I knew the world was in trouble…….

One of them, Jose Luis d Jesus Miranda, has been around for a while and claims he is really the “antichrist”, but that we have misinterpreted what “anti” really means.  In fact, according to Miranda, “anti” really means another.  Which begs the question:  Is he Jesus, or just another?  Let this answer your question – he has told his followers they need to have “666” tattooed...

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

September 2, 2014

At one point during the many hours Jesus was on the cross, He cried out Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani (My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? Mark 15:34).  Some say He was simply quoting Psalm 22:1, but I believe it was much, much more than just that.

Isaiah explains that our sin causes a separation from God:
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.  Isaiah 59:2 (NIV).

From the sixth hour of the day (about noo...

From Charles Hadden Spurgeon, Morning and Evening, Under: "August 21".

August 25, 2014

We are here taught the great lesson, that to get, we must give; that to accumulate, we must scatter; that to make ourselves happy, we must make others happy; and that in order to become spiritually vigorous, we must seek the spiritual good of others. In watering others, we are ourselves watered. How? Our efforts to be useful, bring out our powers for usefulness. We have latent talents and dormant faculties, which are brought to light by exercise. Our strength for labour is hidden even from ou...

Receiving Compliments

August 18, 2014

We had some people over for a get together on Monday night, I grilled some burgers and everyone brought a side dish or desert.  We had lots of fun and as everyone was leaving they expressed sincere appreciation for us hosting and grilling.  I immediately begin to “deflect” their compliments.  After they had left I found myself wondering why I did that.  The appreciation was sincere and it was appropriate – I would have done the same.  In fact, some of my deflecting the compliments was t...

Exciting Times

July 14, 2014

Bev and I had a great time with our family, and it’s nice to be back home.

We are about to embark on and exciting time in the life of our church.  As we explained in the letter you should have received and in the bulletin a couple weeks ago, we are going to start a coaching relationship with Andy Beottcher for the next year.  I really do not know what that is going to look like, we will all learn that together.  One of the first things I believe we need to do and what I am going to ask ...

Family Business

July 8, 2014

It’s THAT time once again.

The time we turn our attention to the new fiscal year (starts October 1st).  October sounds like a long way off, but the Leadership Team has to start now in order to make sure we are ready.  So here’s how it works:

We need you to start praying.  Pray about whom to nominate for the Leadership Team.  Pray for the current LT, to formulate a realistic budget for next year.  Pray thanks to God for all He has done this year and pray asking for guidance for what H...

FAITH - IN WHAT?

June 23, 2014

There is a term for a patient that is beyond medical care- it is not a true medical term.  The term is “circling the drain”.  If you were to watch the news – regardless of whether it is a conservative station or a liberal one the message is the same.  The other guys are causing this country to circle the drain.  There are wars and rumors or wars, pestilence, pollution, civil liberties are threatened, and institutions we have counted on for generations are disintegrating before our eyes....

Private?

June 16, 2014

Occasionally, I hear someone talk about their faith in terms of it being a private thing – Just between them and God.  Most of the time I hear this (you guessed it), I want to throw up.

Certainly there is a part of your faith that is strictly between you and God.  When God deals with an area of sin in your life, you are not required to share it with anyone.  Sometimes God tells us things that we are supposed to keep to ourselves.  In my walk with God, I have found that these times are rare...
