Whose Job Is It Anyway?

June 9, 2014

I just want everyone to know, I am no longer going to try to build the church.  I have tried for years; I have read books that “guarantee” to grow your church.  I have read articles that claim that when this church did that thing, they doubled in size in six months.  Everything I have done has failed, so I am through, finished, done, kaput.

Fact is, it was never my job to build the church any way.  That is Jesus job, after all it is His church.  Not mine, not yours – His.  He even said He would take care of it;

Matthew 16:18 (ESV) And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Instead of trying to do what Jesus said He was going to do.  I am going to focus instead on what I believe Jesus wants me to do.  As your pastor, I am tasked with equipping saints (you) for works of service (ministry).  I want to help you to see not only how much God loves you, but how He has equipped you specifically to do things for Him.  I want to give you opportunities to serve Him doing things that are keeping with how He has equipped you.  I want to show you that you are fully capable of serving Him effectively.

That is part of what I am going to focus on.  I am a Christian too (does this surprise you?  I hope not!), and I have the same responsibilities as you.  I have a slight advantage in that a large part of my gifting has to do with equipping you, but I also have the responsibility of giving others the opportunity to receive the Greater Life God offers.  So I am going to focus my attention on this and kiss growing the church good bye!

God Training

June 2, 2014

By now, you are all aware of the death of our Boxer Jake and the arrival of Trip.  Actually, his name is Jake III, Duke of Killion.  I have had three boxers (all named Jake), Duke in in honor of my dad’s boxer.  We call him Trip (as in triple).  As of yesterday (May 31), Trip is now 4 months old and that means the training begins in earnest.

I say in earnest because he has been trained (and training us) since he arrived.  Now comes simple obedience training.  He is going to learn what the ...

How I handle an Unspoken Prayer Request

May 26, 2014

This morning on Facebook, someone posted a prayer request.  The request was “unspoken”.

A friend of mine, who is unfamiliar with church asked what that was about and I told him that for whatever reason, the person asking for prayer does not want to divulge any further information.  My friend asked what good is it then?  I just smiled.

Isn’t it great that we serve a God who does not need us to be specific?  I find it extremely encouraging that God is so intimately familiar with us that...

Memorial Day

May 19, 2014

A young boy was looking at a series of pictures of people in uniform as he walked down the hallway of church.  Seeing his pastor he asked about the people in the pictures.  The pastor answered: “Those are pictures of people in the Service who have died.”

The child asked:  “Was it the first service, or the second?”

Memorial Day is coming up in a couple weeks.  It seems like a lot of people confuse Memorial Day, a day that we remember those who have given their lives in the service ...

Mother's Day

May 12, 2014

I have millions of mom stories I could tell you.  My mom was not perfect (ask me about the time she almost blew us all up), but she did the best she could (especially considering what she had to work with!).  After all, she had to deal with seven of us kids, the age difference was 13 years and at one time, she had three of us in diapers.  We didn’t get along that well, and when we did we were usually getting into trouble.  But she was always there when we needed her.  We were all with her w...

Revival Blessings Flow from God's Promises

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

One characteristic that is largely lacking in the average church today is that of spiritual anticipation.

When Christians meet, they do not expect anything unusual to happen: consequently, only the usual happens, and that usual is as predictable as the setting of the sun.

A psychology of nonexpectation pervades the assembly, a mood of quiet ennui which the minister by ...

Sometimes Life Just Stinks

April 28, 2014

I am not the most insensitive person in the world, but I am also not the most sensitive either.  However I have been crying like baby for the last week.  Last Thursday (April 17th), I came home from work to find that Jake, my 10 year old boxer died.  He had not been eating for a while, but that was the only symptom he was exhibiting.  I was shocked.

I took care of all the arrangements, brought him to the vet, called the girls to let them know and broke the news to Bev.  Yes, in t...

A Tribute to Bill Bloyd

March 24, 2014

I just found out a good friend of this church has died today.  His name is Bill Bloyd.  Now don’t bother searching your memory banks or asking your spouse if he was the guy who used to play the bass on the worship team.  You never met him.  You see, Bill and his wife Iva (who passed away several years ago), were very special people in my life (and Bev’s – of course).  To my knowledge they never stepped foot in this church – not even once.  So, as you are scratching your head, wonderin...

Your sin has been dealt with

March 17, 2014

I am regularly amazed when someone tells me that they cannot be used by God because of some sin in their past.  The amazing this is this is said by someone claiming to be a Christian.  I say “claiming” to be a Christian because of what Christians claim to be.

Christians do not claim to be without sin.  Not only is that preposterous, but no one would believe it anyway (nor should they).  I have not stopped sinning – I wish I could honestly say I have (my life would be a lot easier).  At...

HARD LESSONS

March 10, 2014

I just learned a hard, painful lesson today.  When the weather got really cold last fall, I moved my bike indoors and put it on a trainer.  I did this so I could keep up the progress I made over the summer.  Now I have to admit that I cannot stand training indoors.  No matter what I do to keep it interesting – it is still incredibly boring.  I did not ride as much as I should have but I did ride.  This “winter” never really materialized, however in keeping a weather eye out, I could not...
