Soldiers

December 3, 2012

From June of 1968 to June of 1969, my dad was sent by the Air Force to serve in Vietnam.  The actual base was in Cambodia – just across the border.  His job was to fly into Vietnam and take reconnaissance photographs so the Intel guys could do their jobs.

So Dad was away from us that Christmas.  Usually Mom did the Christmas shopping for us, but that year Dad got us a present.  The “three little boys” (Mike, Chris and I) got uniforms.  They were kid-sized replicas of his uniform.  Complete with name tags over the right pocket and the U.S. Air Force tab over the left shirt pocket.  We had rank insignia on the collars (I was a Captain, Mike was a First Lieutenant, and Chris, being the youngest, was a Second Lieutenant).  In addition, Dad’s unit patch was sewn on the shoulder.  The Unit was a squadron of F-4 Fighters (known as The Phantom).  The patch was black with gold stitching, in the middle was a mysterious looking creature and the Unit was known as The PHANTOM PhDs.  When Dad died, I found that he kept that patch (and one other).  I kept them along with his Bronze Star and Distinguished Flying Cross Medals and Certificates.  I keep them with the awards I earned in my service in the Coast Guard (those two of Dad’s are far more impressive than all of mine).

Most of us Christians have a difficult time balancing the ideas of being required to love everyone and being a warrior.  Think of it this way; have you seen the pictures of the Marine who has a crowd of Middle Eastern children around him?  He is smiling as he gives each of them a gift.  I am sure you have seen pictures of soldiers behind barriers shooting, they are neither smiling, nor are they being crowded.  It’s because they know who the enemy is, and when it comes to the enemy, your basic Marine and Soldier are ruthless.  They know that for the most part, kids are not their enemy.

Our enemy is not our neighbor (even the one who lets their dog bark all night long), our enemy is not even the guy who cut us off while coming to church this morning (I am sure they were late for church themselves).

Ephesians 6:11-12 (ESV)
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

The enemy uses people and we must deal with them, but they are not the enemy.  Just as the Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard (yes we are out there) are interested in driving the enemy out AND provide freedom for the people in the Middle East, we as Christians are called to do both; be absolutely ruthless to the enemy and love our neighbor.

Just remember which is which.

Thanksgiving

November 26, 2012

“The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.”

Reading this you might have a difficult tim...

EIGHT YEARS

November 19, 2012

Today, (Wednesday) Nov 14th , marks my eighth anniversary as Pastor of Greater Life Church.  I am so grateful to God for bringing me to this place.

We have made a lot of changes to the church, both physically and spiritually.  That certainly is not to say there was anything wrong with what happened in the past.  You must understand that everything that has happened to you in your past has brought you to the chair you are sitting in while at this very moment you are reading this letter.  I...

So, how did the election go for you?

November 13, 2012

Regardless of how you feel, I want to encourage you to continue (or start) praying for our nation and our leaders – especially if you are disappointed in how things turned out.  Not only are we called to do that:

 1Timothy 2:1-3 (ESV)
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and...

Happy Birthday Dave Brown

November 5, 2012

This weekend Bev’s family will gather together in Sacramento to celebrate her dad’s eighty-eighth birthday.  Unfortunately, I will be in Post Falls, ID at a Region Board Meeting and will not be able to go.

Dave Brown is a terrific guy.  He’s quiet, and in a crowd you might not take notice of him.  You’d be missing out.

Dave’s dad died when he was just a kid, and so his mom raised him, his brothers and one sister as a single mom in a little town called Orland, CA.  I give c...

Making things better

October 30, 2012

A few weeks ago I was asked to give the invocation at a group called the League of Nevada Cities; they were holding their annual meetings here in Elko.  My plan was to just show up, pray and leave.  As I thought about it, I decided to stay.  My hope was that I would have the chance to talk to some of the city leaders there and possibly help them understand the role of the churches in their cities.

Most city leaders look at churches as places of inconvenience.  Large churches cause traff...

Navigating through life

October 8, 2012

I was part of the Navigation Team on board the Cutter SASSAFRAS.  My job was to make sure the helm (the people who actually steer), were doing their jobs.  It would not necessarily be their fault if we were off course; the ocean has currents, and the waves and wind have an effect on ships at sea.  I would use the LORAN (a radio-based navigation system used well before GPS became a household word), as well as doing some celestial navigation (basing our position on the sun, moon and stars).  ...

THE BARON

October 1, 2012

I was living on Treasure Island (in the San Francisco Bay), and walking my dog, Baron.  An older car was heading toward us and when it came along side, the car backfired.  I was expecting that The Baron would freak out and try to run away, so I tightened my grip on the leash and prepared for a jerk.  Instead, of running off, he sat down right next to me and looked up at me.  For me, this was a major accomplishment.  My dad took great pride and a lot of effort in training his dogs.  He had a...

Three Things

September 24, 2012

My back is much better, thank you for all your prayers.

We have three big “things” to get ready for:

The work on the radio station continues.  Guys, remember that on Saturday, September 29th (next week), we will meet at 7:30 here at the church for a men’s breakfast and then we will start to build the walls for the studio.  Please continue to pray about this new outreach to Elko and the area; it’s a big task, fortunately we serve a big God.

            Next thing to th...

Daniel - Part 3

September 10, 2012

Daniel was one of the original captives, taken as a young man, and now it is about 70 years later.  Let’s presume for a moment the term “a young man” meant he was 13, he is now 80- something years old.  His mind begins to realize two things.  God said that this captivity would last 70 years; and a guy named Cyrus has become king.

“Cyrus, Cyrus, why does that name sound familiar?  There is something going on here.  God, you said this captivity would last 70 years; is that time ab...
