Daniel – part 2

September 4, 2012

Last week’s letter was about how impressed I am with Daniel and his three friends, who when faced with captivity, did not flaunt their religion in the faces of those captors.  Lest you get the impression they ‘sold out’ let me remind you of two incidents:

Chapter 3, Nebuchadnezzar builds his golden image and forces the people to bow down to it when they hear the music playing.  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refuse – on the grounds that even the appearance of doing so would be an affront to God.

Chapter 6, Darius passes a law that prohibited anyone from praying to anyone other than the king for the next 30 days.  Upon hearing this, the Bible says, Daniel went to his home where his upper windows faced Jerusalem and he continued to pray to God three times a day.

There will come a day when Christians will be forced to disobey the government in order to continue serving God.  This is nothing to take lightly; more than once the Bible tells us to obey the government and its laws.  It’s a fine line we walk, however that day will come.  When it does, there are a few things we need to remember from our friends:

1)    The government will still attempt to coerce your compliance.

2)    Failing that, you will be punished.  You may be killed.

3)    God will be with you.

I love what the three told the king when he gave them one last chance to bow down to the image:  16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Daniel 3:16-18 (ESV)

“…our God whom we serve is able to deliver us…but if not, be it known to you, O king we will not serve your Gods…”

God did save them, and history is packed with examples of others He saved. Possibly an equal number of those He did not save.  Listed along with all those Spiritual Gifts we love (prophesy, miracles, tongues) is one that stands out as one I hope I never need, but if I am called, I pray I will receive – martyrdom.  I don’t want to let God down when it matters the most.

Daniel

August 27, 2012

I have been studying the Book of Daniel in my personal study time.

I am continually amazed at the life of that man.  He was taken from his home at a young age, forced to learn the customs and language of a foreign land, and even though he was royalty (exactly how we do not know) he was forced to serve another king.  Early in the Book, it mentions that Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not sin against God.

So, what he did was preach to everyone he could.  He told them that the...

God at work in me

August 20, 2012

Bev and I have been spending this past week at the A Frame Cabins at Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe (yeah, suffering for Jesus).  There are two cabins on the Station grounds and they are divided into an upstairs and a downstairs, we have the upstairs closest to the lake.  The weather during the day has been great, temperatures in the mid 70’s and lots of sunshine.  In the afternoons (so far) we have had some thunderstorms roll through and that is supposed to continue for the rest of our sta...

Kingdom Life

August 6, 2012

I again want to invite you to join us at either 9:00AM on Sundays at Church or 7:00PM Wednesday nights at our home as we discuss Kingdom Life.

In this series we are looking at the Parables.  The Parables describe what the Kingdom of God is like, and how it works.  It is important, because we are currently living in that Kingdom.  As we have discussed before the Kingdom is here, now.  Not in its fullest sense, there is still much work to be done before that happens, but it was introduced w...

Study Habits

July 30, 2012

It has to be a personal record, One year, six months and three weeks!  We are finally through the Book of Romans!  I have to tell you that I really enjoyed going through this book.  Not only because of what I learned spiritually, but I learned a new way of study.  I’ve never really gotten that deep into studying anything before.

As you well know, school and I were not the best of friends, although I still consider high school as the best 5 ½ years of my life.  I did better in college...

The Old Testament Through The Eyes Of A Child

July 9, 2012

Through the eyes of a child:  The Old Testament in a Nutshell

In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible says, “The Lord thy God is one,” but I think He must be a lot older than that.  Anyway, God said, “Give me a light!“and someone did.  Then God made the world.  He split the Adam and made Eve.  Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren't embarrassed because mirrors hadn't been invented yet.  Adam and Eve disobeyed...

Dad's

June 18, 2012

As you have heard before, my family put the “fun” back into dysfunctional.  Dad was not an easy guy to get along with.  He could be harsh and demanding, he was opinionated and hard as flint.  There were times as I became a teenager where we fought (lots of times).  There were a couple times when we got physical.  When Mom and Dad divorced, I told Dad that if I ever saw him again – I would kill him.

Many years went by before I even spoke to Dad.  In those years, God got a hold of me....

Driving in Oregon

June 4, 2012

I hate driving in Oregon.  Actually I don’t hate driving in Oregon, I hate getting gas in Oregon.  I keep forgetting that you cannot pump your own gas there.  I had to fill my tank three times there during my trip to Washington.  The reason I hate it is because the gas station attendants are so rude when they see you getting out of your car.  Twice I was yelled at because I forgot.  They don’t have to yell, but I should remember to stay in the car.  It occurs to me too, that I don’t kno...

Happy Mother's Day

May 14, 2012

I’ve told you the story about how my older brother, Tom, blew his knee up with a homemade hand grenade when he was fourteen (July 5th,1968) and how Mom, when presented with her bleeding eldest son,  simply opened the door and invited him and his friends who were carrying him into the house.  You just could not faze this woman.  I have not told you how while I was a single dad, I prayed for a woman who would love my girls as if they were her own, and also encourage them to have a proper rela...

CHECK FOR YOURSELF

May 7, 2012

I was recently asked what I thought about the story running around about Pastor Rick Warren (Saddleback Church) teaching the Qur’an along with the Bible.  I had no idea about this, so I asked a few questions.

Apparently Jack Van Impe (a televangelist) and others have accused Pastor Rick of using the Qur’an with the Bible at his church.  My first reaction was that I would take Rick’s side before someone like Jack Van Impe.  I offered to check the story out and let them know what I fo...
