Short Accounts

November 6, 2017

On the weekends, Bev and I spend most of our evenings watching mysteries on TV.  At some point in our evening, we get interrupted by the dogs.  Trip and Duke start wrestling.  They growl and bark at each other and it becomes to loud to listen, so we pause the show and watch the action in our family room.

They really go after each other, barking, biting pawing, growling.  Bev will often ask me if they are just playing, I assure her that yes, they are.  However, on occasion, one will actually hurt the other and the play gets serious.  At that point, as the Alpha Dog, I will intercede and stop the fight.  I send them to neutral corners to calm down. They never get that far.  The injured party will instigate the play all over again.  No malice, no anger, just fun.  Whatever the offence was, it is quickly forgotten.

I think we need to be like that.  Now, I am not talking “Forgive and Forget”.  All that does is to allow you to set yourself up to have to forgive again.  Now we do need to forgive those who sin against us – regardless of the intent of the offender.  The difference is that when we discover if the offence was intentional or not.  If it was, we need to forgive the offence, but we really should think carefully about continuing a relationship with that person.  We are not required to allow ourselves to be taken advantage of, and sometimes severing a relationship is the appropriate thing to do.  When the action was unintentional, then forgive and continue the relationship.  They key to this is to keep short accounts.

Like a dog….

Fighting Trim

October 30, 2017

I am not looking forward to winter.  In a couple weeks, I will (attempt to) take my last organized bike ride of the year.  As long as temperatures remain above 40 degrees and the roads remain clear, I can still ride.  When the temperature drops below that or if the roads become icy, I have to bring the bike indoors.  I have a trainer I can put my bike on, and there are some great training videos available to help me stay in bike riding shape, so I can hit it hard next year.  I have just one p...

God's Intervention

October 23, 2017

Unlike some people, I do not believe that God caused me to miss my two most recent bike rides as some form of protection from some unfortunately event.  However I have experienced God’s intervention in my life.  The most obvious one happened 28 years ago this week.

Throughout my Coast Guard career, I would go into work early, so I could go home early.  While I was in the Bay Area I came in early enough to go home around 3:30PM, or so.  On the afternoon of October 17th, 1989, I got a call f...

God Is For Us

September 25, 2017

If you are reading this; CONGRATULATIONS!  You have (apparently) survived the first day of the Great Tribulation!  Yes, I am kidding.

I was listening to a song a few days ago – I can’t remember which one (I listen to music all the time).  This song in particular seemed to get into my head because the lyrics got me thinking.  The song said; “God is for us.”  Pretty simple – even bordering on being trite (and you know how much I hate “trite”).  For some reason, these simple words...

Giving

September 4, 2017

As a result of the situation in the Gulf, I have already heard from two different “Charities”.  When I think about it, I keep my iPad handy and when I get such a call, I call up a website I have bookmarked called Charity Navigator.  Charity Navigator has a data base of charities and information on how the money each charity receives and how it gets used.  It is a good recourse to have.  Half the time when I am on the phone with one of these folks, all I have to say is “according to Char...

Heir to All Creation

August 28, 2017

God... hath... spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things. Hebrews 1:1-2

In this life, we are experiencing only unfinished segments of God's great eternal plan. Certainly we are not able to comprehend fully the glory that will be ours in that future day when leaning on the arm of our heavenly Bridegroom we are led into the presence of the Father in heaven with exceeding joy!

The writer to the Hebrews has tried to help us in the proper exercise of our faith, with th...

Does He Know Me... ?

August 21, 2017

"He calls his own... by name... " (John 10:3).

When I have sadly misunderstood Him? (see John 20:11-18). It is possible to know all about doctrine and still not know Jesus. A person's soul is in grave danger when the knowledge of doctrine surpasses Jesus, avoiding intimate touch with Him. Why was Mary weeping? Doctrine meant no more to her than the grass under her feet. In fact, any Pharisee could have made a fool of Mary doctrinally, but one thing they could never ridicule was the fact ...

No Sin is Beyond Forgiveness

August 14, 2017

I read something last week that I have read many times before, but it never really “hit me” before.

Manasseh was one of the most evil of all the kings of Judah.  He did more to anger God than any of the bad kings who came before him.  He went so far as to offer his children as burnt offerings to other gods – The Bible puts it like this:

Jeremiah 32:35 (ESV)
They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, thoug...

God to be More Real

August 7, 2017

I can now cross “Be a Conference Speaker” off my bucket list.  Family Camp was a blast.  If you want to know how I did – ask Bev.  I believe I am a gifted speaker and I have a lot of great things to say (all from God – of course).  If people take what I have to say and apply it to their lives, their life would greatly improve.  See why you should ask Bev?  She can tell you how she reacted to what I say and it would give you an idea of what others think.

To me, that is what really mat...

God Needs No Adjectives

July 31, 2017

I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us. Isaiah 63:7

We do not need any enlarging adjectives when we speak of God, or of His love or mercy. God Almighty fills the universe and overfills it because it is His character—infinite and unlimited!

We do not need to say God's "great" love, although we do say it. We do not need to say God's "abundant" mercy, although we do say it. I expect we say it to ch...
