Life Journal Reading

February 27, 2017

We are in a kind of “rough Patch” in our Life Journal reading.  On the one hand, we have lived through Leviticus, but now we face Numbers.  Sounds like a rather strange thing for a pastor to say, but there you have it.  In fact, I quote Pastor Jack Hayford, who said: “all Scripture is inspired, but some are more inspiring than others.”  I want to take this chance and encourage you to “slug it out” – for two reasons:

1)                 Everything you read in the Bible really is inspired.  God put it there on purpose.  There is no limit to what God could have included and there is no way to know what He left out and why.  At the end of John’s Gospel he said:

Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. John 21:25 (ESV)

Even the three years of Jesus’ earthly ministry cannot be completely accounted for.  God picked and chose and instructed His scribes (writers) what to include.  God chose Leviticus, Numbers.  God even had Moses write Deuteronomy – a recap of those books.  We may not see the sense of why they are there, but we need this information.

2)                 If with need this info, then the Holy Spirit is going to make the why clear – sometime.  It is important to remind ourselves that when we read “those” books it was written for our instruction, and what takes place is either an example to us, or it is a symbol of something.  The Tabernacle is a copy of what is in heaven – the same is true for the Temple.  We are not required to keep the Law to earn our salvation, but our lives function better the better we are able to keep it.  Thankfully, Jesus met the requirements of the Law, so we don’t have to make a sacrifice everytime we sin.  It is for our own good to obey the Law.

Understand, it is widely accepted that a few books are difficult to read and apply to our lives.  I believe God understands this too, and so we get a kind of “spiritual credit” for doing it, even if we just do it for Him.  I guess you could think of it like eating your veggies.  You may not like them, but they are good for you.

Admitting When We Are Wrong

February 13, 2017

I admit it, the only thing I like less than being wrong – is to admit I am wrong.  I can do it (Lord knows I get plenty of practice), but I hate it.

The thing is however, until we choke out those words – they will continue to remain inside us choking us.  For forgiveness to be offered (either from God or others), we must admit we need it.  We must admit we are wrong.  I have said it many times before, you cannot save someone who refuses to admit they need help.

Our problem stems from thos...

Luke 16

January 24, 2017

Like you, I have been reading through Luke in my Life Journal.  This morning (Monday) I read chapter 16.  Two great stories in this chapter and we will deal with both of them today.

Jesus tells us about a dishonest servant, who when he was found out made sure he had someplace to go when he got fired.  What he did was gathered his master’s customers and changed what they owed him to lesser amounts.  In the story the master commended the servant for his shrewd thinking.  Then Jesus added: “F...

The Servant's Pray

January 16, 2017

God is amazing!  The reading in our Life Journals recently has taken us through Abraham’s life.  What really stood out to me is the prayer of Abraham’s servant.  Abraham sent him to find a wife for his son Isaac.  The servant arrives, not know anyone, no one expects him and he has no way of contacting anyone.  So, he has this idea….

He prays (always a good idea) and runs his plans through God (again good!).  “Lord God of Abraham…”  To be honest, we don’t know this this servant ...

Resolutions!

January 4, 2017

It’s that time of year (again).  Time to examine yourself and resolve to make yourself better.  To date, the only resolution I have kept in my life was in 1988 when I resolved to never make another resolution.  That is not to say I do not take time to examine myself and look for ways to improve, I do have goals that I make periodically, but I do not make resolutions.  For those of you who do, I have a little advice….

1)                 Don’t be too ambitious.  We tend to make a list (L...

Powerful Message

December 19, 2016

‘…Fear not, for behold I bring good news of great joy that will be for all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord…”

A pretty powerful message:  Good news - -

Of great joy.  This is big, angels on high singing, big.  No mere prophet.  Not bad news.  This is guaranteed to put a smile on your face that will remain, no matter what circumstances you are facing.

For all people.  Not just Jews, or Americans, or White folk.  Everyone ge...

The End of a Matter is Better Than it's Beginning

December 7, 2016

It has been pretty noisy this week here in the office.  Some of the workers were tearing out the kitchen, others were sawing the sidewalk, and others were breaking the pieces of sidewalk apart and throwing them in a dumpster.  Still others were sawing some bricks out of the wall, etc., etc.

During this whole process I have been reminding myself that Ecclesiastes 7:8 says: “The end of a matter is better than it’s beginning, patience of spirit is better than a proud spirit.”  For us, it ...

The Need for Prayer

November 14, 2016

No doubt many of you have been praying during this long election season.  No doubt heaven heard a collective “Amen”, followed by a sigh as the poles closed.  Not because of the results, but simply because it’s “over’.

The election may be over, but the need for prayer is most certainly not.  If the election went the way you hoped it would, praise God, and ask Him to continue to bless this Nation and all it’s leaders.  If it did not go the way you hoped, I suggest that you as God t...

Life Journal

November 7, 2016

As I read the suggested Bible Reading from the Life Journal this morning (Tues), I had the following thoughts:

First of all the reading was Mark 9&10.  In Chapter 9, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up to the mountain where He “met” with Moses, and Elijah.  I would love to know:

What did those three talk about?

How long were they there?

Why did Jesus bring Peter, James, and John?

How did they know who Moses and Elijah were?   (Little red ovals with their names? Friends on Facebook?

Just an example

October 10, 2016

I thought I would show you how I am using the Life Journal:

S:         Esther 2:7 (ESV) He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman had a beautiful figure and was lovely to look at, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.

O:        Far from (ruined) Jerusalem, a woman who was raised by her cousin after her parents died, was “recruited” to participat...
